WAVE Conference

Welcome to the 22nd WAVE Conference!

This year's main theme of the conference is: Structural inequality as the root of violence against women.

Structural inequality suggests that women’s inequality is produced and reproduced by systems of power that are legitimised and institutionalised. Patriarchy and patriarchal structures embed inequality promoting a white male hetero-normative worldview that excludes women (and people broadly) on the basis of race, class, caste, sexuality, migrant status, and other categories of oppression. These systems of oppression are rooted in colonialism, imperialism, capitalism, neo-liberalism and post-liberalism.

Using the political economy approach to understand the root causes of violence and oppression of women allows a response that addresses structural, institutional and cultural barriers with the end result being a more inclusive and representative social policy. This approach is easily aligned with an intersectional approach that identifies all forms of oppression against women and identifies the need for social justice to address violence against women. Under the political economy and intersectional approach all groups of women and their diverse needs are considered critically and equally.

Through this year's conference, the WAVE Network is looking to address topics such as the impact of COVID-19 on women's specialist support services or how to effectively support vulnerable groups of women in a health crisis. Prominent speakers such as: Dunja Mijatović, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Alia El-Yassir, UN Women Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, will discuss the structural barriers encountered and the efforts being made to address violence against women.

The official language of the conference is English, and English subtitles will be available.

Please note: While we would like to make the WAVE Conference as interactive as possible, this year this will be limited due to online limitations. WAVE panels and workshops will be organized in a webinar format, more details will be offered in the panels and workshops.
